Celebrate October!

by Julia Buckley

If you're like me, you feel a bit overwhelmed at this time of year.  Life is moving, as always, at a rapid pace.  The holiday train is on its way; there are, according to Wikipedia, "91 days left until the end of the year."

But if you ARE like me, you benefit from occasional slowed-down moments of reflection that help you put things in perspective.  This past weekend was so busy (and not with things I CHOSE to do) that I ended up feeling very sorry for myself on Sunday night.

But now it's October 1st!  The weather is crisp and cool--a beautiful relief after a brutal summer.  Every new month is a chance to start over and to make plans.  So I thought I'd reflect, in image clusters rather like small poems, about all the things that will make October special.

--the smell of woodsmoke in the air

--beautiful leaves--crimson, orange, brown, yellow.

--cold evenings, warm covers

--hot drinks: tea, cocoa, coffee

--soup!

--more candles

--pumpkins, pumpkins everywhere

--my husband's birthday.  I generally spoil him.

--babies in sweatshirts and tiny jeans

--warm cats to be used as blankets while I watch tv.  :)

--Oktoberfest

--beautiful sky-scapes

--getting out the favorite sweaters!

--long, brisk walks

--stews in the crock pot

--baking bread!

--pumpkin pie

What would you add as a favorite part of October?

And happy October, everyone!

Football. Not the NFL but local youth and high school games.

And my son's birthday.

Happy October to you, too.

I'll vote for the fall colors and being able to cook (hot ovens, etc.) when the weather cools.

Don't forget apples!

How could I forget football? Thanks, LD!

Sheila, that's a great point. Now I want to make an apple crisp. It's supposed to be in the 50s by the end of the week . . . .

I love your fresh take on a fresh month to get you out of feeling sorry for yourself. Very positive.

I'm with Sheila - baking, simmering, anything to heat up the kitchen.

And this year? Launching my first mystery!

In my house, it's gain football, lose a husband. Glass half full: that's a bad thing, because it's a good marriage. I get him back after New Year's--he doesn't give a hoot about basketball. My granddaughters, 8 and 5, recently went to their first ball game (Mets) and found it boring. Chips of the old X chromosome. ;)

Congratulations, Edith! Reading mysteries is a great October pursuit, too. :)

Liz, my condolences on losing the husband to football--but at least he's in the house. :)
